It’s hard to understand why Gypsy Rose is not receiving inpatient treatment rather than imprisonment. The death of her mother was fueled by years of an abuse that not many in the world today can even fathom. I can’t help but wonder if perhaps she would have received more empathy had her mother beaten and broken her bones, or had her mother been a father that sexually assaulted her over and over again. And, I don’t mean to offend anyone with that comment, but the depth of brutality in this form of abuse is immeasurable. I believe it is much more prevalent than the statistics reflect, but because of a lack of understanding on how to recognize it, it goes not only underreported, but never even gets recognized. Gypsy, like many abused children, didn’t report her abuse and likely didn’t even realize she was being abused until she got older. The realization of such a twisted life on top of any guilt she carried in her role in the lies only furthered her need to keep silent. And, she may have believed she had no choice. I’m not saying she should not face consequences, it just seems prison will only add to the entrapment she felt her entire life. I’m not sure how anything is just about that. Factitious disorder by proxy is very real, and those few more severe cases that make the news are the tip of the iceberg. My guess is that there are thousands of survivors out there now whose medical abuse may not have been as severe, but damaging all the same. And sadly, there are thousands of kids out there now enduring this because we just don’t know how to find it. The experts aren’t learning anything too new, and they won’t unless they talk with more adult survivors. They may be hard to locate, but they’re out there, and they are the best resources for more knowledge and understanding.
Sounds like the Watts murder case.
Explanation of most trans kids
What's the difference with fictitious disorder and hypochondriac?
7:07 and 7:27 are the exact same clips duplicated in the editing process.
I wonder how many medical professionals have this disorder?
Nicholas Godejohn Saved Gypsy from her psycho mother, he should be praised not imprisoned.
This reminds me of another movie, "Love you To Death" about this case. It's a Lifetime movie.
There is also a great book about that, called "Everything, everything" and you can also learn about the physical illness SCID
🖤
Thanks for this video. I'm a victim of this and spent my first three years in hospital, and had dozens of operations. I find it hard when people see my mother as evil, when this is an illness, as it's good to have informing vids out there. I have found it hard that there isn't much out there on the long term effects of victims.
Kati, So glad to see you did a video on this subject. I had a friend who has munchhausen's and I kept asking her to see a councelor but she would feel like I too was out to get her…. it ended our friendship. Last night I came upon a animal rescue channel,, RESCUE IN PUBLIC where after watch several of his videos I am convinced this guy has M. by proxy only with tiny helpless kittens! He's a bad actor, and who has someone following them around ALL the time videoing them??? These kittens are always alone, and look to be around 5-6 weeks in age…. I reported him to You Tube just now, and wanted to get clear on M. by proxy….
Will you look @ this man's videos, and see if what I'm saying is true, and then also report him? I want to find exactly where he's at so I can call an animal wellfare and report what he's doing. His channel says united Kingdom, but does that include Philipines, Myramar, Thailand, etc.??? HE and where these vids are being made are clearly in some tropical country not England, etc. It makes me sick that people do this. I think he wants the money from YT and wants to be thought of as a hero.. I sure don't think their veterinary help is legit either.. Please write back to me on my e-mail…. Thank you so much! Nancy
Who all is here because of Eugenia Cooney??
9-10% of children who are victims of factitious disorder by proxy die because of the abuse, but not 9-10% of ALL children die because they're somehow affected by a disorder with a lower prevalence than that. I thought that was worded a little unclearly the two times that it came up. At first I was completely shocked and wondered where the 1/10 "sick" and dying children were among the people I knew.
Someone said this is a lot like Eugenia and her mom, her mom allegedly neglecting Eugenia for views/beneficial gain, and should be looked into before its too late.
This is what Eugenia Cooney's mom has. Someone has to save Eugenia from her:(
Who came here from Eugenia / Shane -related content?
Eugenia Cooney.
Wondering if you could clarify the 9% stat…do you mean 9% of victims die, or 9% of children at large? I find the latter super hard to believe, but the way you said it sounded that way.
I feel like this is happening to eugenia cooney
Oh my god I heard about this show I couldn’t even bring myself to watch it because the concept is freaking terrifying. I can’t believe people do this to their children
Gypsy had reasonable sentence and I hope she gets out happy but what kind of mother does that.
Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn. It's horrible.
This reminds me of the book “Everything, everything”

My mom made me seem like I had borderline personality disorder and tries to put me into iop and hospitals and exaggerates my depression and anxiety/addiction. She tells my family members about my addiction. She tells my therapist things behind my back (I am 17 years old) that I do not consent with. She says it’s out of “safety” concerns. I did not give her consent to talk with my therapist. I was forced into an outpatient program because of her. My therapist obviously sides with her because I am under 18 years old so no one really believes me. I don’t know why she is doing this. she’s a social worker too which makes it more confusing. It’s driving me crazy. She is always diagnosing me and saying she’s here to support me and will do anything for me but she does this to vulnerable people. Does anyone have any advice?
This keeps coming up in my recommends… But I can't make it past the 2 minute mark. I've been out of my mother's care since I was 14 and I'm now 31 and I still cannot even hear the words munchausen's by proxy without my stomach flipping over. Like I said I haven't watched the entire video but the trauma that follows victims of parents with this disorder never ends. I never trust myself when I think that I'm sick I never trust doctors or symptoms or medications because I always feel like there are unnecessary because of what I went through as a child. I'm still in counseling I have children of my own and this will never ever leave me. For the love of everything youtube how many times do I need to click "not interested" for this video to not pop up 😓?!
The Mary Beth Tinning case was such an extreme (yet fascinating) case to listen to, if you're interested in these cases, True Crime Brewery has a very comprehensive podcast on the case. They also have other similar stories on their channel. You should check them out!
As someone who is chronically ill and was born with a genetic disorder, I do not understand why the CINNAMON TOAST F*CK someone would WANT to be ill!!!
I have been obsessed with these MBP cases for a long time now and found your video both entertaining and educational. Keep up the great work.
I’m very curious… is emotional factitious disorder possible? Like for a parent to create an environment that is emotionally and psychologically so traumatic and stressful all the time that they get to take them from doctor to doctor claiming they’re crazy and need medication… When it’s actually severe neglect and abuse causing the child to act out.
I live a few miles from Dee Dee and Gypsy’s house
9% of all children, or 9% of children that are victims of factitious disorder by proxy?
I know someone who adopts dogs, and then they always get sick and die. She posts all about the dogs being sick and dying get attention on Facebook. I can’t believe that people don’t see this for what it is.
There they go changing terms again. Lol.
Why was the name of the disorder changed?
I've got factitious disorder. Or the diagnosis for it at least. Not by proxy, god. That's horrifying. Hit me up if you got questions.
Hi Kati! I was wondering if you could make a video on Depersonalization/derealization disorder? I think it’s fairly common but no one talks about it. My fiancé suffers from it and I would love to know more to better understand what is going on and how to help.
Kati, thank you so much for this. My question which may be hard to answer is this: why do mothers do this to their children? Is there some sort of chemical imbalance going on, do they lack the capacity to love and care for their children? I would love an answer if you have one
What can I do if I think a family member is doing this to another family member?
The Act is brilliant. I just finished watching it. It’s terrible that happened in real life and the program does state that it’s dramatized for television, but it’s still really an excellent show. I couldn’t take my eyes away. The actors were so good. My heart goes out to Gypsy, even if The Act was 90% true. Such a terrible situation.
IS there a mental disorder called 'pure evil' and when does it apply?
There was a story that happened in my home state of Ohio about 17 years ago. (I live in Southeastern Ohio, and this happened in northern Ohio.) The story goes that a woman told her hometown that her daughter (who was only 7 at the time) had cancer, and went to all the extremes: shaving her daughter's head, creating a chemotherapy "port" on her daughter's' back, giving the girl pills to make her sick and sleepy (she'd give her daughter the pills, then take her for a drive until the girl fell asleep, then when they got home, she'd tell her daughter that she slept through a treatment), and even as far as putting her in counseling to prepare her for death. It all was revealed to be a hoax the following December when one of the teachers at the little girl's school discovered the little girl's hair was growing back and saw that it had been shaved and didn't fall out naturally. That's when the little girl's parents and grandmother were arrested. (The woman said she made the whole thing up to keep her husband from leaving her.) The girl's father only spent five years in jail, but the mother spent six and a half years. (If I were the judge in that case, I would've released the father, but kept the mother in jail for life.)
No one can convince me Gypsy deserved jail time. The mental, physical, and emotional abuse she endured is horrific and it's a miracle she didn't end up dying at the hands of her mother. Gypsy has actually said she doesn't mind her sentence because she feels more free in prison than she did living with her mother. Just sad.
i don't really trust myself when i feel physical symptoms? i don't believe that i make anything up, but my mom has called me a hypochondriac before. i get pretty bad anxiety regarding my physical health to the point where i request getting tests (wether it's blood lab, urine lab, x-ray, ekg, ect.) i do get sick a lot and more times than not my doctors appointments for mundane things actually reveal something minor i didn't go in for (like an ear infection, or uti) i don't want to be sick but i feel like i am? and i absolutely hate that because i have multiple mental diagnoses and take medications, it's difficult to pinpoint symptoms for actual problems. i have ocd, bipolar II, and generalized anxiety but i never know if my physical symptoms are just a symptom of mental illness. idk it's complicated rip
Can you do a video on DiD!
