  1. interestingly enough Buster´s father was also a boxer and the only way to be near to him was by boxing. therefore he was a reluctant fighter who didnt have his heart in the game. Not being focused enough was his main weakness and he last many fights he should have clearly won because he gave up when faced with adversity. On that night in Tokyo he was game and would have given every Hall of Famer in Heavyweight history a run for his money.
If this focused version of Douglas fought Hollyfield in Late 90 its very possible that Douglas would have retained his title that night

  2. Its doubtful Tyson regarded Buster as even a mild threat. Hell, Vegas wouldn't take the fight, hence it had to be held in Tokyo. In my opinion we got a very motivated Douglas vs a highly undedicated Mike. Tysons training regime consisted of hookers, boozing, blow and God knows what else. James Buster Douglas trained like a lunatic and nobody can take anything away from him. Still the fact Tyson almost got a KO with the uppercut was still a holyshit moment of just how great Tyson truly was. It was a fascinating time to be alive if anything.

  3. Not fair at all to call him “ Tokyo Douglas “.
This was a case of poor career management. Look at how Canelo and Golovkin fights bums in between.
After going through hell to score the upset Douglas should have taken a tune up fight or do what Fury is doing fighting bums before rematching Wilder .
True he prolly could never be that focused as in Tokyo because his Moms death . Just a case of too much too soon

  4. Much respect in review. Agree! Tyson greatest strength was his greatest weakness; style. His size, height and weight with his style was pit bull. To maintain that strength, he needed training to support the style. In order to train, he needed the disciplined lifestyle to sustain the training.

  5. Buster Douglas went totally fearless into the fight, fore sure it had something to do with the loss of his mother. His last combination is one of the most impressive knockdowns I´ve ever seen in professional heavy weight boxing. How he had overrunned Tyson with a combination of precious punches, had shown what a great boxer Douglas was, especially on that night. He was throwing in everything he had with total determination and succeeded over an arrogant and sloppy Tyson.

  6. Why dot you call him Tokyo Tyson?
It even sounds better than Tokyo Douglas.
Your arguments are stupid. Pacman and Mayweather are not comparable, not that big of an age gap like there was between Holmes and Tyson. And there was one Heavyweight Tyson ducked and he was also a lineal Champion. But you skipped over that.
Hell, he was even over his prime. But even Holmes knew he might possibly beat him as well.
    His name was George Foreman.
Listen to you justify your bull. He beat everyone……until Douglas knock him the F out!
When did Tyson ever come off the canvas to win? Never!
Remember my friend, the flame that burns twice as bright works half as long.
Tyson in my estimation only had a prime window of 5 years. Taking into consideration the time he was in prison.

  7. Teddy Atlas has always claimed that Mike Tyson in big fights against opponents who matched up well against him was 0-6.
Amazing that the fanboys who watched Tyson beat up tomato cans to pad his fight record, only see his dominance against poor fighters and never the ones who truly tested Mike as Tony Atlas said.
Tyson was never that good and Ali would have surely defeated him in both of their primes.

  8. Every boxer has their best all time day when everything is clicking…. preparation, timing, balance, snap in their punches, footwork and very important confidence. That was Buster Douglas that night. And every boxer has a off day when they are not up to par for various reasons. And that was Mike Tyson that night. Perfect storm for Buster Douglas and he made the most of it.

  9. I had no I idea some people considered the Ruiz Joshua upset more surprising and influential the Douglas Tyson… What an absurd notion. Thanks again, Rumsfeld.

  10. He would have beaten anyone. Bowe, Lewis, Holyfield..all of them. He channelledd his grief into getting himself into the shape of his life and tap into his full potential for one evening. It was an all time, masterful performance.

  11. As for Buster Douglas, about even with Tyrell Biggs and Tony Tubbs, and behind Tony Tucker; still a good performance. Being in proper condition is part of the sport so he definitely deserved the win.

  12. To be fair, AJ was at or pretty close to that air of invincibility in the UK despite the knockdown against Klitschko. Since he got up to win, people thought that meant he had a chin. He also stopped everyone (usually in devastating fashion) until he fought a lean and defensive Parker

  13. It was the only of Douglas fight where I saw him turn up in shape, the only time he fought on his toes. He always had the speed, looseness, skills and accuracy. Tyson also proved he wasn't a quitter in the Ruddock fights.

  14. Before the fight the Sky commentators (Glenn Mccrory?) spent most of the build up talking about Tyson's partying and other camp rumours, even so I didn't expect Douglas to fight as well as he did.

  15. as I anticipate people making excuses for Tyson, remember that a millionaire athlete who isn't ''himself'' or fully ready to defend his world title doesn't need you to come to their defense. Mike Tyson is/was a Boxing historian.he knows this sport and knows that Douglas had fairly quick hands and was not exactly a journeyman. he could beat the champ that one time a year or so he 'trains' to fight for his world title. and he did. people put Tyson on a pedestal. while not taking JBD seriously as a threat to his belt. one of the best moments of the fight was when Iron Mike landed that killer uppercut that would've had a lot of guys OUT.(and don't start w/ this ''long count ''bull. Douglas was clearly listening to the ref's count, the only one that matters. and he gave himself all the time he could to get up and face the former baddest man on the planet. Tyson was still Tyson, and Buster showed he could take a punch. something you don't underestimate about your opponent.Tyson is a Hall of Famer. Douglas is not.Tyson is still the youngest HW titlist, who unified the HW titles w/ devastating power in both hands. Duouglas is not. but he won the HW title ,February 1990, in Tokyo.

  16. Tyson had always been susceptible to boxers. There just weren't any decent ones around to highlight his flaws long enough to beat him. Douglas wasn't that good but Tyson's skills had deteriorated enough so that a decent boxer, with enough determination could take advantage of his flaws. I think two years earlier Tyson knocks him out but that's what makes it a fight. It's not enough to be a good fighter. One must also fight well.
