1. Should I admit to having a Ph.D. in high energy experimental physics, a degree I earned long ago, without also learning to properly solder? Sure, some of my circuits worked, but many more failed, plagued by cold solders and poor connections. And every time I went to solder, I worried. While I still don't "know" how to solder properly, your video has given me hope that I can finally learn. For now I once again must rewire the small trailer I use to transport a snow blower. Cold is in the Hudson Valley. Snow is coming. And again my wiring harness fix has failed. Maybe this time I can solder wires together rather than joining them with butt connectors and 3M Scotchloks. Thank you for the exceptional clarity of your video.

9. If you don't use enough heat with lead solder, then it will have a dull, not shiny, look to the joint.

25. I loathe those soldering "guns". 90% of the heat is in the rest of the wire and in the body. 140W used to get a 15W equivalent tip. Especially when you make your own tip out of copper wire. The entire wire is heating up.

26. exelent tutorial, i'm an industrial electrician and also work with electronics, everithing was very well explained, i would just add that if you are gonna solder on an old wire, you want to clean the cooper first because even being insulated, wen you strip the tip of the wire it comes out filty, so with paint thinner, break cleaner or contact cleaner remove grease and other contaminants from the bare cooper, there is also a very good paste i use that clean the surface and acts as a flux when heated, is burley brand paste, comes in a yellow thin can with red vintage font, also if you wanna make an electical connection that will be subject to high current is a better pratice to crimp the connections, the solder joint has a little resistant that can produce heat and gets brittle over time

29. Take a look at a book called automotive wiring and electrical systems by tony candela. It’s on amazon and offers A LOT of tips on every electrical situation you may find yourself in, as well as tools to have on hand. With splicing copper, not that your doing it wrong but IMO your adding a lot of unnecessary steps for such a rudimentary straight splice. I highly recommend the book.

38. 10:25 Wrong, dont clean tip after use (only before), solder normaly prevent oxidation of tip, if you remove that layer tip ll burn out quicker.

    8:35 If you dont have helping hands, just band tin streight and then solder the wire.

44. Thanks for the video. Just replaced a bunch of bad wires on my surround sound speakers. No joke I did the solder on the tip of the iron thing lol. It's a lil globby and not that pretty but hey it works. I wish I would have watched this video first before trying it. This video makes sense and is filmed perfectly. Thanks for education me.
