  1. Please don't try to teach things you haven't been trained for. I'm reposting a comment, because you aren't alone in shoddy soldering on Youtube. Uncle Sam spent a boat load of money teaching me how to solder for NASA. You failed to remove the oils from your hand and it will cause corrosion eventually. You always want to clean the joint after soldering too.

Your soldering would never pass a high reliability test. Best practice is to clean the wire with alcohol, let it dry and apply rosen flux before soldering. You can get away with your technique for years, but it's not the best way. We discovered this during the space program when a satellite was 100 pounds over weight. The theory at the time was "bigger the glob, better the job," but we did a lot of research and came up with a set of best practices. There are classes you can attend, and probably online now too, called "high reliability soldering." It may not matter for most stuff, but it's best to learn the right way first. You can decide if you want to skip corners. I've done it your way when I didn't have time or the right tools, but I shudder every time I look at my shoddy work later.

  2. When soldering wires, do you have to cut the plastic part out to show the wire or you can solder with the plastic? I have a very thin wire that i need to solder and it would be a pain to cut off the plastic to get to the wire… or is there a smart way to remove the plastic or can i just solder with the plastic?

  3. Nice job. Most of you guys are such diks and know-it-alls. Why can't you comment to improve the technique, rather than just say bad things… That is meant for those of you who have those abominable testicles hanging from your truck hitches. Lol. All in jest.

  4. In most cases when you solder wires, you cannot be putting your shrink tubing on the wire AFTER soldering, but it has to be done before, which is what you should have been showing in this tutorial as that is the hardest part to get right.

  5. Have you any videos or tutorials about splicing wire 1/0 battery cable, into a "Y" configuration? Needing to replace a stock battery cable and FORD does not have it any longer.
    Thank you for sharing!
    Marion.

  6. It took so long because he only applied the narrow side of the gun point when he should have turned the gun so that the whole tip broadside touched the wire.

  7. No one says the real trick. The real trick is to use good quality flux and solder. Amtech makes amazing flux and kester solder is what I use. From the irons I ruined because of the cheap flux and solder I used to now, it makes it A LOT easier to solder. It’s as simple as it should be.

  8. So yeeeeahhh… couple things.
1- you don’t “tin” the soldering iron unless it’s brand new, you only tin a new iron.
2- you put the heat shrink on first so you can actually get it on because nobody’s doing this with disconnected wires.
3- the “automotive connectors” are not meant for exterior use they have a purpose so it just really depends.
