WHAT?! You have to pay to use public toilets, and to drink water in Europe?! And cigarettes are fashionable?

It’s about time someone addresses the cultural differences between the USA and Europe!

I just finished a 6 week Eurotrip — which means I’ve now spent more than 1 year of my life in Europe, and visited every single country on the continent (yes, all 45 countries!)

While many things are similar about American and European culture, there are plenty of little (and BIG) differences that I’d like to bring to your attention in this video!

It took me 6 weeks of compiling this footage, writing this script, and editing this video… so I hope you like it! And if you enjoy, please share with your friends 🙂

  1. Bull**it. The toilet is free in tiny nation cities like France. Also, of course the waiter will offer to sell you bottled water, but the whole city of France offers unlimited tap water. Go to Ikea or McDonalds and you'll get the cup free as well.

  2. Of course as Drew said these are generalizations, there are a lot of quirks in pretty much any country in Europe and it is fun to find out what they are. Like in most of Europe legal drinking age is 18, in Lithuania it's 20 (Latvia and Lithuania also bans the sale of energy drinks to people under 18). Finland, Sweden, Norway only sells stronger alcohol in special stores, in some countries pretty much all stores are closed on Sundays etc.

  3. ''in Germany government incentivises you with 25 cents for returning a bottle''
emm no, it doesn't work that way – they add 25 cents to the cost of Coke, and if you return the bottle you get them back, that's how it works

  4. as an European, I felt that it was necessary to confirm some of these for you all

    1) Pay to use public toilets
That’s actually correct, you do need to pay to use the public toilet. a trick of mine is to just walk into a cafe and use the toilet there. there’s a chance that there will be a sign saying “for guests only”, but nobody really cares in all honesty, since I broke that rule countless times, and nothing really happened to me

    2) Water is not free
Now I was the one that got surprised, as I thought that water costs everywhere. As for that tip to keep a water bottle to fill it in public fountains, that’s also true, but before you fill your water bottle, make sure to see if there’s a sign that says that it’s not allowed to drink, or you might get really sick (I made that mistake once-)

    3) Every city has a history
yep yep, correct! theres nothing much to say, other than it is true.

    4) They drive less
now this one depends on the people more. it is true that every area is bike free (and that gas for the car is expensive as well), but be cautious that you may have trouble parking your bike. and public transportation is indeed everywhere and not that expensive.

    5) sports are not a family affair
I would need to say 50/50 on this one. we do love soccer a lot, but we also really love many other sports, such as handball. but we are definitely not really crazy fans about it unlike you Americans. Or I just don’t know many people to confirm that

    6) smaller food portions
I don’t see anything wrong with our food portion to be honest. And that coke can- I have no idea where you got that from. As well as that ketchup inside a jar.

    7) cigarettes are fashionable
ehhhhh I gotta admit, that’s true. Sadly, many people do indeed smoke here in Europe, but it again depends on the people, which means that not everyone smokes. But it is common to walk around the streets and walk by a person or two smoking.
    – And I will also add up that the sentence ‘smoking = cool’ was actually really offending. I understand that he’s trying to explain the point, but he could’ve used a different word instead.

    8) they dress nicer
Alright, it’s rare to see Europeans dressed randomly. We do dress nicer, and I’m taking it as a compliment, haha.

    9) they can speak multiple languages
Now the title itself is true, we Europeans do know 2-3 languages fluently, but definitely never past 4! I have never in my life met a person who can speak 4+ languages fluently, so this is actually incorrect.

    10) they recycle more
Finally an American pointing it out!! Yes, we do recycle a lot more! And yes you do earn money by giving away plastic bottles in Germany, but the Scandinavian also have this system. This one is 100% true!

    11) Coins actually matter
Yeah, coins are important over here. They’re high value.

    12) toilets have 2 buttons
You took me by surprise again- you guys don’t have 2 buttons on the toilet to flush?!
And yes I need to agree, sinks are tiny, even for us haha.
    – a little correction; the 2 buttons are more common in public bathrooms than home bathrooms.

    13) Electric cars…
Yes, they’re actually more common! There are even special parking places just for electric cars so they can charge while not in use (as it was mentioned in the video as well)

    14) fewer trash cans
Okay this one is true, and yes the streets are just as clean no matter what.

    15) Street signs are tricky
This is actually my own pet peeve when visiting cities. Street signs can indeed be found on the buildings, and its frustrating when looking for it!

    16) dinner is an all-night activity
Actually, every restaurant is an all-night activity. I just want to clear up that you rarely spend 3+ hours in a restaurant. You actually spend 2-3 hours in all honesty. As for getting the check, yeah it takes a while, but when you’re out eating, you shouldn’t ever be in a hurry, and time flies by fast, as we talk a lot.

    17) they love the outdoors
Yes we do. Every restaurant, cafe and bar have typically an outdoor seating place, and every park is always filled with people

    18) longer vacation
That is indeed true. I can’t say much other than that we do get longer vacation than the US

    As for what you missed;
    – not all European countries use Euro.
    – if you need help with anything, don’t be afraid to ask us! we all know English (mostly the younger ones), and if we don’t know the directions, then we’ll politely apologise.
    – taxis can and will be expensive. Scams in them are also common, so beware of them. Always ask the taxi drivers how much it will cost before hopping in the car.
    – and of course, enjoy your stay!

  5. Caucasians happened to chill much more than Asians….we are working just too hard….Mainly countries like Korea, Japan ,Singapore …..Should like to relax more and see the world….Peace!!

  6. I hate when Americans make these stupid videos as they encourage ignorance rather than educate. And traveling to every country in Europe doesn't warrant an accurate understanding of the various cultures.

    – Water is free. Next time explicitly ask for TAP WATER. Unless you're telling me that bottled water is free in USA restaurants. And usually, they'll not give you sparkling water unless you ask for it lol
    – "In Europe, Sports arent such big events." That is completely false! Isk what countries he's talking about. And Football is the most valuable and watched sport in the world so it deserves more than an "except for soccer", we take sports very seriously, it's a religion lol

    – Ketchup is free in most places.

  7. USA or overall America honestly is the only country (continent) I ever see complain about stuff. For example I watch Slavic, German, Italian and French Videos and not once have I stumbled across fat acceptance, Anti Feminism or Racism videos. Like y'all got some shit that needs to be sorted out over there don't project it onto the entire world. Over here in Europe our ppl aren't to 50% obese crazy men hating females or racist cunts shooting eachother for coming from another country. Just saying America kinda sucks

    Allot😂😂😂😂

  8. Well unlike the USA in Europe every country is a lot different. We have our own culture, language etc As a Greek sometimes we share more culture with non European people than Western Europians

  9. Pretty much none of these could be applied to Eastern Europe, or at the very least not to Ukraine (been to Poland and Hungary tho and it wasn't that different)
Almost none could be applied to Italy either

  10. Dude, water for 2-5€? Where did you eat/live? Those are Swish/Norwegian prices, in Germany it's at most 1,5€ for sparkling water or (free, if you say it's for your meds).
