I gotta say this video and the video with your brother and dad about doubting if good enough helped me a lot! Makes me realize I’m not the only one that feels like they are over their head at times and feels like they are good at faking it.
I appreciate the positive vibe in these videos. As I realize I am a 39yr old IT guy getting into Networking at this point in life and trying to study for certs and getting OJT, these inspirational videos help.
The real question is what makes you a network engineer. You will never know what something is untill you try it.
I transitioned from being an electronics technician to a network engineer in 1995. It was mostly a flat bridged network that was moving to OSPF and IP routing. Back then, we had numerous protocols to learn i.e. IPX/SPX, SNA, DECNET, DLSW etc. along with different media, i.e. token-ring, FDDI, ATM, thick-net. We had a Nortel and Enterasys infrastructure with a little Cisco sprinkled on the edge. Over time, Ethernet ruled out all the other media’s and IP routing became the de facto standard. We became a Cisco shop and replaced OSPF with EIGRP. Goggle was not mature yet, so we had to hit the books and CD/DVD’s. I got all my Nortel certs, Network General certs, and eventually, my Cisco CCNP. My starting salary was $57K. Today it’s $130k.
It’s a complicated field to keep up with, because the technology constantly changes and there’s always something new to learn.
However, engineering enterprise networks will never get boring?
Thank you for making this video.
Thank you for doing this video. It really hit home for me.
Fix it fix it fix it fix it 😂 I be like 😰🙄🧐😞☹️🥺😖🤯😭😱♾😒
One advice I would like to give anyone who's changing careers is when your changing careers especially when you are in your 40s n late. You have to put in double the amount hard work into your studies. Also if your spend 24 hrs at school in a week then those same 7 days your have to put in minimum 24hrs or more at home and keep practicing at home all time.
You did hit on something that is one of my biggest issues about the IT industry as a whole, it is as you said it, "I just got my CCNA, but fear of not knowing even how to use it" my biggest issue is the boot camp style of learning how to pass an exam without any actual hands-on training for real-world experience. You take almost any other career path when you graduate, you will get hired and then trained how to do the ins and outs of the job you got a degree in. IT is the one that seems to demand new graduates to have at least a year of experience right out of college. Offering little to no training program within the company. You take Plumbers, Electricians all of them learn on the job as they go, if they demanded all entry-level employees to have 1 year of experience, we would have no trade skill workers at all. I think even those who have just passed their CCNA should work under an associate with a CCNA/CCNP for at least 6 months before they are given projects to do alone.
Fuk me , I needed to hear this , 40something and I’m terrified to switch careers , but I needed this ty
Man its like you are a clone or something you hit basically everything I was worried and upset about thanks a lot. Got me on the right path again.
Circuit: I have a circuit that is driving me crazy. I don't want to go to tutor just for one circuit. Is there a group or options out there that would evaluate my circuit?
Do you need a good computer to learn how to do this type of work? I have an laptop works perfect just a little out dated 09 dell
Thank you. Made me feel better about trying to enter the network world at 30 🙁
Reboot your computer and call me when I finish my CCNA.
I have been dealing with a lot of personal issues and have decided to change careers…from welding/maintenance to IT. My absolute biggest hurdle is trying to get into help desk at my age with no documented experience or qualifications. I will not quit. I will not fail. I want to be a blockchain developer. I will be…
Dude!! You def hit it on thr nail!! Man!! I needed to hear this
Doesn't matter if one fails 1 time or 2 times? 😀 Damn it costs around 25,000 rupees to take the CCNA exam in India and that's like the salary you can expect if you have passed. LOL Therefore that amount of exam fee makes you think more than 10 times before registering for it. Hahahahhahahaha
Good video
Damn i my self is not smart to be a ccna network.
you are the Great Person Chuck!!!
Love your videos, I’m a mechanical engineer but want to get into network engineering
yup, I feel that… I've been doing IT for 14 years but for some reason after moving to Charlotte I am having the hardest time finding a decent IT Job. Am I good enough. the Job market says no. but time will tell.
