Consumerism in the U.S. has reached an all-time high. In 2017, we spent $240 billion on goods such as jewelry, watches, luggage, books, and phones—twice as much as in 2002, even though our population grew by only 13 percent during that time. This is not to mention the 81 pounds of clothes and textiles that each American throws away annually, or the 26 million tons of plastics we collectively dispose of each year.

In a new animated video, writer Alana Semuels describes why shopping is so addictive and emphasizes the urgency in finding an encompassing solution to the problem of wasteful consumerism.

  1. WHAT!!?!! China said they’re not going to take our junk anymore!!!!??? Well we’re not going to BUY their junk either!!!😠…okay, I lied…even I wasn’t convinced with that.🤦🏽‍♀️🤓🤷🏽‍♀️

  2. If we all had better childhood we wouldn’t need to fill a void in our life. I don’t have a shopping problem nor have i ever shopped online!!! I’m very frugal and shop at thrift stores 99% of the time. I get free furniture off Craigslist and have fun repurpose it. I’m now to the point where I don’t “ need “ anything at all. So now I’m saving money to buy a house. I have money to save because I don’t shop. I’m not a typical female i guess. My friend is opposite of me. She shops alllll the time. She gets that buzz then when she gets home she gets depressed and returns most of what she buys. Like binging and purging but with shopping. It’s literally sad to witness. When ever i get an itch to shop , i go THRIFTING !! I also donate back and when i do this I get a 30% off coupon so it’s literally almost free.

  3. I used to work for H&M and they actually have this textile recycling program. You bring in a few bags of old clothes, towels, curtains, rags, anything textile and it will all get recycled or donated. The things that can't be donated are usually shredded down and reused as car insulation and things like that. Even the fibers that the recycling plants vent system catches are collected and reused. On top of that, H&M gives you a 15% off coupon for donating. It was like the one thing I was proud of while working there.

  4. Is this how stupid we are as a developed nation and species?

I grew in a age of constant child advertisement. Best guesses as to which decade I was born in. I was a child that often asked why?

I try to use things until they break with no hope of repair. Until they wear out. Hell I am typing this on a laptop. That I intend to have for at least seven to ten years. With a make-shift stand from furniture I found in the trash. My printer is sitting on what appears to be a short end table I found in the trash.

As a kid I salvaged a lot of older computer parts I found in the trash. Perfectly functional, they just threw it out.

Most of your multimedia life can fit in your pocket or your bag. My entire .mp3 database can fit in about three gigabytes. A sixty four gigabyte drive can cost less than twenty dollars.

You can build a cheap all purpose desktop for under $700. However, of course I am talking about windows or linux users.

I am still wearing clothes from twenty years ago.

O yea, wait I am a dude. Who grew up in an advertising culture and recognized the bullshit for what it was. For what it 'still' is.

I am surrounded by predominately females most of my day. One of the things many of them have said to me repeatedly over the years is. "Why do you not buy new clothes?" Or "that shirt is worn and faded." The clothes serve their purpose. I paid for them or someone else did ten or twenty years ago. I am not out to impress anybody. I like what I am wearing.

Most of my everyday pants have holes in them. Also one of my two pairs of shoes are getting worn out. Now I have no choice. I have to replace them. So I will be doing that this week.

I am a human being. There are things I would love to buy. However given the realities of life. I understand that saving, investing, and harshness of the day to day. My indulgences are kept to a minimal.

  5. Best financial advice I ever got was don't live with, date, or marry a woman. I've never had a problem with shopping since. I always hated shopping. Today: ZERO debt baby!!!!!!!!! Even better, I have an emergency fund, savings, and investments. Go figure. I will NEVER be buying jewels or blood diamonds. EVER. Thank you Dad! "BLOW ME UP TOM!"

  6. I don't buy a lot of stuff… except clothes. I have enough clothes for ten people, but I ALWAYS buy on sale. I finally stopped a few years ago, it was getting out of hand.

  7. Best dressed! I love her and she has definitely encouraged me to thrift shop and not throw away my clothes! She’s one of the few fashion you tubers that I watch for this reason
