  9. The capitalism we see today is not really capitalism. We can trace where we are today to a memo written in 1973 by Lewis F. Powell, Jr. during the Nixon administration. It was written at the request of the then-director of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Powell was to write his opinion on how best to make corporations more relevant than the voting public, because obviously, there were more people choosing to vote for what benefited the masses than to benefit corporations. Nixon was so impressed with the roadmap Mr. Powell set forth to achieve greater voting impact for corporations, that he appointed him to the U.S. Supreme Court.

    Anyone can access that memo on line. It is worth reading, because it shows the step-by-step, slow & steady legislative changes we have undergone, especially Reagan's trickle-down economics, weakening of unions to the point of Right-To-Work (for less money & no benefits) states; stopping enforcement of Sherman Anti-Trust laws; stop FCC enforcement of The Fairness Doctrine, and on and on, to where the GOP is now, where they can't win an election without some very serious voter suppression.

That is completely wrong! He can ONLY get part of it and all depends also on how much people is willing to pay for the chair. Sometimes you can have a good profit and sometimes not.

    The worker has to be well paid, according to what I just said, period but then the surplus belongs to the capitalist because he took the RISK of the business. What if the business goes wrong and he goes bankrupt and lose his house ??? Is the worker going to help the capitalist, little investor middle class guy who asked for a loan to the bank to start this business?????? Ahh??? Imagine you in that situation…

    How this example is going to work for a middle class people trying to make a living if the worker is taking the whole $100 added value for the manufacturing of the chair and the little investor only get enough money to buy again the materials to build another chair? He gets nothing on this example. Do you want that for you if you start a new business?? What it has to be is FAIR payment for the worker, bonus as incentive when the worker is good, when it is possible, and 100% Surplus for the investor for his creativity and the risk he took to start the business, period. What he said is a bad version of socialism.

    You have to think as what you want for you if you are the worker and what you want if at the same time one day you become the investor, that way you are putting yourself on each other" shoes to make a fair decision.

(that's the Communist Party) There has been no other system that has lifted so many people out of poverty and squalor as capitalism. Apparently your problem is that capitalism has both winners and losers (mostly due to their own choice) and apparently, you are a malcontent loser. To say that Russia was lifted out of poverty by communism is nonsense. In those years before communism and the Industrial Revolution everyone was poor all right. Technology advanced the human condition, but communism it just insured that everyone was EQUALLY Poor. In the fifties sixties and seventies Russia was extremely poor and hungry with very little selection like North Korea is now where people didn't have enough to eat because the government put so much of the countries GNP into a big military in self-defense. Only now are they more productive (but still nothing compared to the United States) since communism's collapse and they became more capitalistic including allowing more freedom like opening up Russia to Christianity again. You have obviously been absorbing a lot of bull shit Marxist/Commie/Left-wing propaganda. I have been in Russia 3 times between 2000 and 2007 and I know what I'm talking about. Marxism always has little personal freedom & huge all controlling government and bureaucracy that will never allow any country that applies Marxist ideology to become prosperous. You couldn't just decide to be an entrepreneur in old Soviet Russia. When you were a little kid the government would give you test to see what your innate abilities were and then they would decide what you would be educated in, how much education you would get, and what your life's job would be. A street cleaner and a doctor are paid the same because the idea behind Marxism/communism is "From Each What He Can Produce & To Each What He Needs" Marxism has you trade your personal freedom (including free speech to voice your opinion) for security and your purpose becoming to "To Serve The State".

    Your opportunities under capitalism are certainly not diminishing. Where did you get that bull shit. My experience is that I had a job, 1st in a restaurant, then as a lineman for the phone company then as an auto mechanic. , But at age 35 I went independent and through an ad in the paper to attract people that needed a handyman for small jobs. For about 27 years I worked doing averagely 3 to 6 small jobs a day for different people. If I needed more work I could increase my advertising and at 1st I started out with a $35 minimum. My 1st job was to put up a TV antenna for a lady. Within $35 minimum I would frequently be walking out with my check (and often a tip) within 10 minutes like with a stuck garbage disposal. People would be thinking they needed a new one and were tickled pink when I would use the key in the bottom of it and press the reset button to quickly get it going again. I retired in 2006 at the age of 62 with 2 condos and a 5 unit apartment building that I finally just got paid off. (I threw extra money into the mortgage cutting about 10 or 12 years of my 30 year mortgage. I retired as a small job handyman for the prosperous property and business owners of West Los Angeles and Hollywood making at least $300 a day, most every day. Don't tell me you can't make it in America's capitalist society. It just depends on how smart, creative, innovative and hard-working you are.

  17. 1. CEOs have their values. Suppose 100 employees combined together could produce 200 unit value, add another CEO might generate 250 unit value. But I agree CEOs took away too much comapre to average employees in USA.

  18. The fact that ‘The Squad’ was able to practically overtake Democratic Party tells of the crushing defeat of the Party’s political strategy. Its strategy is to use socialist ideology for political dominance. The two fundamental and related challenges here are to have a working ideology and to have constituency susceptible to the ideology. The Party obviously failed on both.

    XX century was truly an era of ideologies. Ideology being a modern incarnation of religion does not tolerate competition from religion. A number of totalitarian (and the most ideological) societies of XX actively fought against religion. I doubt that moderate American Democrats tried to follow that path. But religion eroded in the free world as well, and ideology has filled the void. Not incidentally, that ideology is socialist. Socialism has its roots in Christian teaching and the two have common ideas. No wonder that so called ‘progressive’ politicians in America did not come up with any different ideology: that would require an ideological genius on par with Karl Marx.

    Societies vary in their susceptibility to ideologies. Religion in America is eroding at slower pace. Secondly, America has strong entrepreneurial nature, being built by adventurous people of the world, who were not satisfied with the opportunities in their native countries. Such people, the doers, the actors are more firmly rooted in common sense, more realistic, less gullible to the fairy tales of socialist dreamers. And they have much to lose: the most prosperous country of the world which they and their likes built. Like the real mother from king Solomon fable they cannot see their child cut to pieces.

    Professor, id like to speak to you if possible. I have a question I need to ask about starting a coop and the morality of someone saving up for equipment, then eventually going from a sole proprietorship to a co-OP. If that person is disabled, can't really work, but has acquired equipment including some automation, and is just wanting to make a coop with an even split so he provides equipment, others provide labor, and everyone gets to eat, is it unethical? Would that be capitalism or socialism?

    Yes, I'm talking about myself. Too broken to really work but I have tools, system doesnt seem to care (disability wait), no money coming in, bills piling up.

  20. Prof Wolff, you readily accept that co-op system is not problem free. One such problem that could occur is conflict within the masses when they do not agree on the decision. The majority of masses could impose their will on the minority. It would be a dictatorship of the majority. On the other side, within the ranks of the masses there could be an individual or a small group who are persuasive, charismatic, manipulative, and shrewd and who end up imposing their will on the masses. It seems that "class warfare", "inequality", and "class envy" could exist in co-op system just as it exists in Feudalism, Capitalism, and State Capitalism.

  23. That math expression is so disingeneous. He left out for example that the capitalist brings value to the Total Labour by bringing the tools and the workers together. The capitalist invested in both, sometimes at a personal risk.

    Another thing is when the capitalist divides the value money from the products sales, those added values may not have the same 1 to 1 rate of worth since currency (de)values depending on the market and the products worth.

    Another point would be that the price of the product can be incremented by the capitalist according to the logic of the market which may work in the workers advantage if the enterpreneur is generous.

    Btw no taxes were mentioned in this equation.

    I'm not defending capitalists or attacking workers, just saying that this presentation is quite manipulative.

    You are correct about one thing. Global corporations sold out the US worker. I was against, it wasn't fair.
    Another reason it was a stupid move? because it kept communist China from failing. The Capitalism saved the doomed to fail Socialist economy. Good for the Chinese people, bad for the rest of the world. And worse yet?

  45. Dr. Wolff, what about the fact that the U.S. is a Constitutional Republic, not a Democracy? What about the fact that the current socialists are unabashed about proclaiming themselves to be so while advocating for people to get money from that surplus, or profit, without contributing any labor at all? If Marx had theories about real people, why did he not see these dangers in an expanded role for government as planners? I believe it is self evident that people are more productive under capitalism with lower regulation than with it and growth in the economy is burgeoning with reduced regulation.

    I will look at more of your lectures to see if you have anything to say about attempts by government to destroy freedom of speech and the family in the U.S.

    Having been born in the seventies, I have participated in various cooperatives and they usually don’t work. Trying to set up a perfect system without taking into account human nature is foolish. People in co-ops grow resentful if they believe they are putting in more effort (labor) than others and a heavy hand is necessary to control the participants. Do you not think that socialists also need happy hour? In San Francisco and Berkeley, where I lived for 35 years in a very leftist community, Happy Hours are still really popular, as are depression and suicide.

    I am attempting to learn more about socialism and appreciate your contribution to my education.
