Voter turnout in the 2014 European parliamentary elections was alarmingly low, especially among young people. Ahead of the 2019 elections, our report asks: do young people care about the European Union anymore? Or have they come to take it for granted?

For this report, our team of reporters travelled throughout Europe and talked to young activists – some pro-Europe, some anti-Europe. 23-year-old Diana zur Löwen, for example, is a passionate supporter of the European Union. She has more than 700,000 followers on Instagram. Her focus is actually on fashions and cosmetics — but right now, she’s trying to get her supporters excited about the upcoming election. The average age of European MPs is 54. Tiemo Wölken is just 33, which makes him one of parliament’s youngest members. Wölken is also using social media – like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook – to get young people interested in Eurpean politics. Our report also points out that many young people are less than satisfied with a lot of EU policies, and they want to see some changes made. For example, in Greece, a lot of them have lost faith in the European concept. Youth unemployment in Greece is high, and many young people have few prospects for the future. In Hungary, a lot of young right-wing EU critics say the organization is threatening the country’s national identity.

  5. Europe is just a location on a map, it has no cultural itself, each individual country in Europe have their own unique culture and traditions that differ from other European countries, so how can people identify as European?

  7. #ThistimeImvoting campaign was a big failure if we take into the consideration the even lower turnout rates of the 2019 elections. And how could it possibly be different when this "campaign" was even financed by companies and lobbies like Bayer-Monsanto while no serious issues for young people were addressed? Another hypocritic aspect of this campaign was that after the fiasco of the Cologne "happening", they invited in Brussels (always with biased and not transparent criteria) a fashion(!) social media "influencer" who was supposed to encourage other young people to ..vote but eventually she ended up posing like a model in the European parliament! How pathetic?!?!?Europe might have a future as a continent, but this hypocritic and inhuman European Union (actually German Union) has nothing else to expect from the future but its own collapse!

The problem with EZ and the UK and US is that the economy does not work for young people; it works for big business business and vested interests, regulating out small entrants whilst letting big giants walk all over small independent businesses and trades. Manipulating the yield curve and enabling access to cheap funds for a small few. The game has been completely rigged to keep the poor paying an economic rent, either directly through debt or indirectly via their landlord. It totally stinks and there is no political alternative which does not end up having a socialist stealing the sweat off your brow. What young people want is a chance at a future. Not this bullshit game of working for a lifetime and never having a chance of owning the soil beneath their feet.

  18. It's really strange that the volunteers just want you to vote and they don't care what you vote for. It's as if you vote actually doesn't really matter because they will have their way anyway, they just want you to vote to claim legitimacy.

  19. Few europeans realise that Europes biggest problem for the future is an ageing population. Who’s going to take care of the old? Many old people will end their life in misery and poverty because the ruling class were more interested to buy luxury villas, swimming poles, cars and yachts instead of creating stable state finances. That’s the main problem. The poorer the state the less interest in welfare, taxes and other dull obligations necessary for creating welth.

  32. The Eu is not a nation or country The eu is 28 nations rich in their on culture language and history. Europe is a continent it has more then 30 nations that form a continent call Europe I believe that’s this project is not going to work . The European Union will collapse in 10 or 20 years

    Europes future is a group of independent nation states who respect the borders between them and cooperate on issues of mutual interest. The EU must be dissolved.
