Durrington Walls
Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Archaeological Prospection and Virtual Archaeology

The remains of a major new prehistoric stone monument have been discovered less than 3 kilometres from Stonehenge. Using cutting edge, multi-sensor technologies the Stonehenge Hidden Landscapes Project has revealed evidence for a large stone monument hidden beneath the bank of the later Durrington Walls ‘super-henge’.

The Stonehenge Hidden Landscapes Project team, using non-invasive geophysical prospection and remote sensing technologies, has now discovered evidence for a row of up to 150 standing stones, some of which may have originally measured up to 4.5 metres in height.

Visualisation done by Juan Torrejon Valdelomar and Joachim Brandtner

The new discoveries at Durrington Walls will also be part of the upcoming exhibition at the MAMUZ Museum Mistelbach “Stonehenge Hidden Landscape” including original finds from the Salisbury, Wiltshire and Dorchester Museums.

  1. Since few people bother to read these I will post it from the video's summary:

  2. it's a water canal, look at the line coming from the river splitting like a fork and ending up to the snake shape ditch. It's use was to draw water into the field to grow vegetation for consumption and bartering. Only an idiot would miss that.

  3. The animation doesn't go in a complete circle or arc to see the remainder of the stones that seem to be on another end. Also, there is no explanation as to what the white sandy looking "ponds" are and what those spiky sort things are sticking out from them. Further, the circle of trees next to the neolithic site suggests another circle of some sort also from the distant past? A few graphics in the animation would also clarify just where we are in relation to Stonehenge, ETC!

  4. Wonderful collaboration of universities and teams of specialists to bring this to us and help both understand and update our knowledge. I am looking forward to the various interpretations culturally too! Thanks you for this… Gotta love science…
