What is proxy server? Proxy server is one that acts on behalf of another server, usually for Web related purposes. Proxy server is a type of firewall. It intercepts all messages entering and leaving the network. The proxy server can effectively hide the true network addresses and keep the keep machines behind it anonymous mainly for security reasons (so it is a part of firewall) and it speeds up access to a resource by caching.

An open proxy is a proxy server that is accessible by any Internet user.

Caching proxies keep local copies of frequently requested resources, allowing large organizations to significantly reduce their upstream bandwidth usage and cost.

A proxy that focuses on World Wide Web traffic is called a “web proxy”. The most common use of a web proxy is to serve as a web cache.

Firewall/Proxy Server Practical:

Locate an open proxy and then configure your Browser to use this Open proxy for connecting to Internet. Also prove that all the Internet traffic from your PC passes through this open proxy server.

Steps involved:

Go to proxy4free.com or xroxy.com and note down the ip address and port number of an open proxy.

Goto ip-address.com (not ip-address.com). It will show the real ip and your country and city. Note down this information.

Open Internet Explorer , Go to Tools , Internet Options , Connections , LAN settings.

Select the Checkbox with the label “Use a Proxy Server for your LAN”

Enter the IP address and port number of the Open Proxy.

Check whether you are getting Internet. If you are not getting, then configure with some other open proxy.

Now, check your ip address by going to “ip-adress.com”. It will NOT show your real ip address. Because your ip address is hidden by the proxy server. All your Internet traffic is now passed through the Open Proxy Server.

Once done, dont forget to revert back to the original setting of Internet Explorer.

A content-filtering web proxy server filters unwanted URL MIME, or content keyword filtering.
An anonymous proxy server generally attempts to anonymize web surfing.
