  1. Of course it still works, apple hasn't changed the database format to actually hold the music metadata in 20 years, all iTunes has to do is read and write to that database and copy music files to the device.

  2. I still use my ipod 6th gen, and it has 160gb, I haven't used half, and even though I have had it for perhaps 6-7 +- years, it works just fine and I love it, and I love the way it saves my samsung from dying when I want music, I miss the freedom of Spotify on it, but it's pretty good none the less

  3. I kinda want a classic iPod. As a kid I had a cheap MP3 player that used a triple a battery, then had the iPod touch 4. I love the look of the original iPod, I might pick one up

  4. Maybe, there is no code needed at all in Apple Musik to connect? If it is just mounted like a drive, there is nothing special for the Music app there, because everything is handled in lower layers – the Firewire drivers. And of course, Firewire devices are still widely used. So, this is actually no surprise…
Unclean implementation of the Win drivers for certain 3rd party FW controllers (every interface product with own different drivers) is an obvious reason for the problems there. So it might be taken as a proof that vertical integration is superior…

  5. I think the code is so small that developers have overlooked it.
But you i´ll never see an iPOD gen 1 on a Windows PC.

    It was MAC only.

if you chose an second Gen iPod, you should see him !!

Have some old ipods here and all runs fine with windows.

  6. Colin, if you go for a slightly older version of iTunes for Windows it should work. I had issues with 4th and 5th gen Classics on the latest version, but if I stepped back a couple versions it would work fine.

  7. I have an old Mini DV camcorder. I have to link it through firewire adapter plus 800 to 400 adapter then the cable is a 400 to mini media dv cable. Works really well. So cudos to Apple for letting older gen tech to work on newer systems 😊

  8. The most logical conclusion would be that apple uses the same communication method for all ipods. So car stereos that have iPod connectivity, they work and communicate with all ipod generations..

  9. we knew about that years ago since apple isn't like microsoft. Apple runs on propreitory software so it's very easy to program since you wouldn't have to worry about the hassle of programming it to support other 3rd party devices.

  10. I think the reason it doesn't work on Windows, is that iTunes needs low level access to the iPod to authenticate that it is an iPod.
Someone else mentioned that there was another program that has to be running. That other program probably interacts with Windows at a lower level to allow it to check.

  11. When Apple split the MacOS version of iTunes into 3 programs they just moved each function into seperate application files and move formatting into the MacOS finder and even on the windows version of iTunes, some of the folders that the program uses still references "Apple Computer" and folders from updates to the program after the company name was shortened to "Apple Inc." just say "Apple" – an example of this would be the %appdata% folder on Windows.

  12. For a tech channel, you seem woefully light on tech understanding. The iPod protocol for music has not changed since the original design, so there's no support to pull, it works because it's using the same protocol. And the reason it's not working on Windows 10 is either because this is a 1.0 generation iPod, which only works with OSX (macOS) or it's because you did not install the driver. I have an original Gen 1.1 5GB iPod as well and it connects to Windows 10 fine.

  13. Since I've been RGB modding all my old consoles from Twin Famicoms to N64 and Turbografx CD etc. and retroftting better screens onto Gameboy originals and such, I would like to take my new solder/modding skills on to doing this! I recently just installed a battery into my older 5th gen 80GB I love, and wish they never stopped the click wheel…was a pain separating the casing however, Apple loves to not have people touch their own products or interchange parts that extend its life! But I can definitely see the appeal to these dedicated guys, glad you did a vid on this!

  14. A lot of people, myself included, do not like AiO products. We like dedicated devices that do not require a password or pass code just to listen to music. Also, apps on phones seem to be getting bigger and bigger. More recently, I got rid of the Google Music player on my android, which is about five years old now. I basically run my devices into the ground before replacing them. It was becoming bloated with streams, podcasts, etc when all I wanted it to do was play MP3's Furthermore, it was pushing 12MB. I replaced it with another app that was only 2mb, 6x less the size but that got replaced because it would auto-close if left on pause too long, sort of like the old VCRs. Anyways, a dedicated device does interest me quite a bit, even if it is not an Apple product.

  15. It speaks to the weirdness of Apple software that you didn’t expect a hard drive with some song files on it to be read by a piece of software that reads songs.
