1. I was rather disappointed that Rick did not explain the nation's system of government which is unique in the world. They have two heads of state called Captains Regent who serve a six-month term and then they must wait another 3.5 years before they can run again. It's sort of like having two presidents. Their parliament is called the Great and General Council which is made up of 60 members. And one final thing; the members of the gendarmarie and judges are all foreigners (virtually all Italian citizens) because in a nation of only 30,000 residents, if judges and policemen and women were native Sammarinese, they would most likely be someone's cousin which may lead to favoritism.

2. I passed through here during a tour of Italy I took in 2000. The only way I knew that I was no longer in Italy was the presence of the Sammerinese flag over government buildings. Other than that, you cannot tell when you leave Italy and enter San Marino.
