since the power was not the limiting factor, i wonder if adding a counterbalance weight on the inside of the train would yield a much higher speed or if the additional weight would slow it down.

That's interesting. I didn't know that Marklin technically used a 3-rail setup like that. Most HO-scale trains use a 2-rail power system where the positive and negative leads are on opposite rails.

That's a lot more complicated than normal OO/HO model trains
You forgot to add the weight of the train as a parameter, the distance between the rails, the position the centrifuge point of the train refering to the rail surface…., As long as thr centrifuge point is closer to the surface =0 or even less than zero you can go at much higher speed, thanks for the video
that will funny if you boost the speed on long rails with no curven so the trains do not derail…

You could try adding some magnets at the bottom of the locomotive to increase the force that attaches it to the rails. This method is commonly used in slot cars. Anyway, great video as always!
