هند لایحه اصلاحیه شهروندی (CAB) را تصویب كرد ، قانونی جدید است كه به دست آوردن تابعیت هند برای اقلیت های غیرمسلمان از كشورهای همسایه آسانتر خواهد شد. مخالفت با آن به ویژه در ایالت آسام شمال شرقی هند ، که با بنگلادش هم مرز است ، قوی است. آسام یک منطقه از نظر قومی متنوع است و دارای جمعیت زیادی مسلمان است. هزاران نفر برای اعتراض به این اقدام جدید ، از یک اردوگاه مخالفت کردند. مردم از آسام می ترسند مهاجران هندو بدون مستند از همسایگان بنگلادش اکنون شهروندی به دست بیاورند و روند سیاسی منطقه را رقیق کنند. یک اقدام اخیر در زمینه ثبت احوال تابعیت 2 میلیون نفر در آسام را که اکنون مجبور به اثبات تابعیت خود هستند و یا بدون تابعیت از زندان اخراج می شوند ، محروم کرد. هندوها که از لیست خارج شده اند اکنون دارای محافظت هستند. اما نه مسلمانان ، که می توانند با اخراج روبرو شوند.
