How about artists? Dont they need attention for their works?
This "script" could use a little editing. So many good points but not expressed in a very economical manner.
Overdosing on natural dopamine…
3:01 – Joseph : « The more I go after that powerful feeling of getting attention, the unhappier I am »
– Guy in public : Gives attention.
So if one is driven in life by the goal of getting more followers, acceptance and attention almost or perhaps exactly to the point of obsessive-compulsive-disorder then is that not literally like being in a cult? This lines up with more than just one vernacular and scientific definition of religion and religiosity. So perhaps what we're seeing there is one new secular religion of our times. The historian Yuval Noah Harari did write in one of his books after all that new religions nowadays are more likely to arise from the Silicon Valley than from Jerusalem or Mecca.
So if attention is a god then it's what in the Judeo-Christian tradition at least would be called a false god or an idol because it won't give you what you expect from it no matter how much your worship it. It's in the very structure of the problem determined by human nature including it's brain chemistry related to addiction which makes attention a false idol. You build up tolerance so like any addict you're always craving for more like the world economy which needs to grow exponentially in order to stay alive. But such a thing is impossible to continue indefinitely so you're guaranteed to fail and to get a bad outcome. Thus a destructive false idol like drugs in the Metallica song Master of Puppets.
I 100% agree and appreciate for his courage as public figure to admit it..
I felt like watching Snowden 2
A very talented actor. I'll never forget him from 3rd Rock from the Sun. Great comic timing 🙂
he's fake
I just followed him on instagram..
You might roll your eyes at this but there's a bible quote that's relevant to this, I think it was a Jesus quote that goes something like: "the more you reflect on yourself the more you forget yourself"
I'm glad I listened to this 80%of the way through w/o looking at who was talking (hits harder)
Great talk! What a kind and genuine man. Much love
Joseph is a damn legend
I was wondering if anyone wanted to discuss with me a question I had. Isn’t the point of making creative pieces to express yourself? And expressing yourself implies recipients, people receiving what you’ve created? So how can you be creative without going after attention? I’d love to do what he’s saying but it feels hard for me
Love the way he thinks, talks, and expresses. He is beautiful inside and outside. Thank you Joseph for sharing your creative mind. Lots love from Japan❤️
I think this is one of the best TED talks in a long time.
HE EVEN HAD THE OUTFIT OF A NICE GUY.
I feel called out
I don’t relate to this guy. Never needed followers or cared
Good
His words are amazing and is just what I needed right now. Thank you so much!
While I agree that social media has made instant gratification with likes more important than putting in hours at your craft, it's also nice to get encouraged, and not feeling like your work is appreciated makes a lot of people give up.
what a lovely talk thank you for this <3
I'm preety sure some of us don't even know this guy.

SNOWDEN IS A NICE MOVIE OF HIS
Don juan hello
I love this man
props to him for being so vulnerable and real. this was great.
Thank you YouTube for suggesting this video ✌️
watching this made me feel better about myself-someone who doesn't get much attention on social media or real life- now I just need to focus on something and give it my attention. I've always been sad that people are not interested in me but I've been too lazy to try to get their attention also so idk what that means but it makes feel unfulfilled that nobody gives me their attention but I'm smart enough to know why that is and that's because I don't do anything creative and I'm not a naturally attractive person. I wish I could be fulfilled and happy without needing validation or approval. being aware that I am from that generation that wants attention but provide nothing that deserves attention makes me sad but maybe that's just what a teenager is or maybe because I didn't leave home for a while and I'm not an active person on social media so that's making me feel lonely? I hope I find something that genuinely interests me to give it my attention before I just look for something to be good at to get some attention. idk but that talk is great. just came here after watching Don Jon. I think Joseph Jordan is my favorite actor.
underrated video
