    Two things about programming machines to act like humans.

    1) It's a great exercise in programming and hardware development.

    2) You do not want to actually use machines with a personality. Do you really want your toaster to argue with you about how much it burns the toast?

    Artificial Intelligence has more to do with how someone defines intelligence than it does with an artificial version of it. That is to say – people are adjusting what they mean by using the term intelligence – to what some machine is able to do – and then defining that as being intelligent – when it isn't.

    The thing with the human brain is that it can train itself to do myriad tasks. It is extremely flexible. With machines – you want to program them to perform specific tasks. So it may have a long list of things it can do – and be able to do them very fast and very accurately – but – without someone sitting down and writing a lot o code – all it's going to be able to do – is whatever someone has already programmed into it.
