  1. "Many of today's most successful composers" with all due respect nobody starts writing classical music wth the goal of being the next Ferneyhough or La Monte Young, so that is an awful appeal to authority. That isn't to say that there aren't capable composers who are alive and working today, but the only composers of the last 100 year whose work is aspirational are Stravisnky, Strauss, Hindemith, Shostakovich…..maybe Schoenberg. Did they compose at a computer? No, and using a computer to help you compose (rather than to just engrave a score) always receives an automatic no from me. I love to support composers with my money but if I don't trust that you're the only intelligence behiind the music I can't support it. I see it as tantamount to paying someone to write a paper for you at school, almost plagiarism.

The piano comparison isn't apt. Yes it is an admission of lack of ear training buy still to use a piano requires a modicum of musical skill and to write at a piano means that all of the ideas are the composer's ideas since unlike a computer pianos do not think.

  2. I find that re-writing an existing piece of music, (changing the key, placement of chords, rhythms, and even tempo) can open new avenues of composing by analyzing what the original composer did and inventing new directions they didn't implement.

  3. I may not find David Bruce's music captivating, but instead find it weird, I still like his videos because his tips and guides are pretty helpful when it comes to the process of composing.

  4. 4:15 "Listen to the first 2 seconds and then compose what you think should come next". Try doing that with Yesterday by the Beatles. "Yesterdaaaayyyy….. (PAUSE THE CD)". Except everyone already knows it. Would be kinda cool though to have a bunch of people each try to complete the song after just hearing that first word, those first 3 notes.

  5. "I got this from a friend who no longer plays it". I always feel sad when people stop playing. There was a guy at my school widely known as BOBBY BASS. And then one day… he stopped playing the bass. How is that even allowed?

  6. I have used Piston's Harmony for many years (almost 35) as well as his Orchestration. I have learned a lot from them. I will definitely check out your book recommendations though! I do tend to collect musical instruments too. I don't yet have a horn (I have played one however) and I find that playing them helps me learn the intricate nuances of each instrument. Your work is helping me put aside the daily drudgery and get back to composing. I have a choral piece I am working on so I may incorporate some of your hacks into my own writing. My mentor has a Ph.D. in music and is very encouraging. A good mentor or teacher is another good "hack". I am encouraging my brother to write more as well and explore musical creativity. Nice channel, Mr Bruce!

  7. I listen to a lot of opera by verdi and puccini I am a fan of opera haven 't listened to much of the newer works by modern composers but using a pencil or pen is easier than using a daw that I don't have can you give me any tips

  8. here's my advice:
    1) use a sheet music notebook
    2) use a sequencer e.g. Reason
    3) learn to sing notes at the piano

I have loads of manuscript books. Writing directly in them leads to marks from scribbling and rubbing out all the time, and there are missing bars… you name it. So a notebook can be really useful as it holds what's newly created. Then you refine it and rewrite it.

Sequencers play music free of mistakes. The sound won't compare to a piano, but they offer the ability to really see the structure and re-arrange notes as needed. oftentimes I've written something on piano, put it in the sequencer, then I hear/feel that some notes are missing. so, refine, play again…***plus you are not limited by technical ability, which is a concern when using an actual instrument.

singing notes gives a good sense of tone and where notes should 'go' in a melody. I am not talking about singing notes from memory, rather, you play something, and in your mind, you can hear/feel what the following note(s) will or should be

  9. Alas, I cannot play an instrument so I do nearly all my composing with technology. I do have one avant-garde classical piece I actually played on a keyboard, but that's the exception, not the rule. Whether the music world needs my music is a whole nother matter, but I get a lot of joy out of it, and if technology can help me, more power to it.

  10. Here is a composing hack that works for me. If I listen for a few minutes to an existing piece of music, be it classical, folk music, jazz or wahtever, I get into the mood of that music and I am then able to create similar music by just singing. I cannot really stop and start to notate it. I have to just sing and let it flow, so I must record it. Then, after that, I can work with this recording and use it to create a composition, with notation and everything.
