This is a VERY thorough diagnostic video detailing the process of elimination required to determine the cause of a very puzzling problem, but in a very logical way.

  1. First let me say as a guy who builds computers but not for a living, you are a very good person. Its pretty clearly reflected in your video. A great American. Second, your pain equals our gain. I don't recall every witnessing a better computer diagnostic video. Yes it was exhaustive and why so informative to the non professional computer tech. Third, your speech aka diction is clear. You speak deliberately. It can be easily understood what you are talking about and you really know your stuff and don't blow any smoke at the lay public.

A whimsical note you may appreciate. I would never do what you do 'in this particular instance'. I would never work on that computer…ever. For your labor + price of new mobo + price of new case NOT = the end result. A cheap store bought computer with 8th gen I3 chip would be the ticket. If you want you can plug in the good GPU and ram…transfer over. Certainly not worth your skill or time…or profit.

My thoughts. What a great guy you are and thank you so much for your methodical walk through of how to properly diagnose a computer no start.

You are the man and thanks again Carey. You are a better man than I. I wouldn't have gone near that computer with a ten foot pole. Really hard to work on other people's f-ups.

  2. Trying to add uniqueness ALWAYS comes back to byte you…lol. I’d still have concerns on the orig other parts… that might have sustained minor damage, not tested by only a boot-up. But he did need to spend wayyyyy too much time just to get a working system put together…
In my pre-retired years, I was a tech in manufacturing… troubleshooting systems… the methodology pretty much the same, which is probably why I enjoyed the vid… as much as I did. Thanks for it !

  3. Just came across your videos, thank you. I noticed at about 45.50 you dog come into view with the cone of shame on. It's great to have supervisors in the background. Love your work. BTW I have had problem after problem with HP and AMD. So glad I am not alone. Hi from downunder in Australia.

  4. I´m also a tech with over 25 years of experience and sometimes when the pins of the socket are twisted It´s possible to get the motherboard word with patience, a magnifier and adequated tools. At least you can try. Personally I had success 2 of 5 if not 3 of 5… Good luck

  5. I have a similar problem with my PC I thought it was the PSU. I bought a PSU and the same results, I changed GPUS and cables and got the same result. I bought a new motherboard and the computer still wasn’t posted. I took it to a local PC repair place and they told me that it is the motherboard and PSU. I don’t believe that I honestly think it’s the processor

  6. Shorts in USB ports can really be detrimental to the function of the system, and I can attest to that. Once, when I visited my older brother and his friends in college, they had an Xbox 360 that suddenly refused to turn on, and happened to have a flash drive in it. The 360 made a noise when the power button was pressed, but it didn't actually do anything more. I can't really explain why, maybe it was a short in the flash drive (because the port looked fine) but it turned on when I removed the flash drive. Another time, in my own Xbox 360, the plastic bit inside came off without my knowledge, so when I plugged in my flash drive, the metal case shorted the exposed pins, so it did the same as the last one. I remembered the problem with the last one, removed the flash drive, and sure enough it worked fine then.

  7. Speaking of a power supply, I recently got an old computer that stopped booting to XP. It also took forever to boot to any of the USB sticks and my Zalman virtual drive. I took an SSD from a bench PC and was able to finally boot to Windows 10 but the system kept freezing. Left it overnight to do the memtest, all good. Then the PSU just blew up. I replaced it with a bench one and the PC works fine considering its age

  8. This is a very educational and learning tool for we computer techs. This video is well worth watching. Carey, you do an amazing job of eliminating the source of the POST failure. In the end, that's what it's all about is process of elimination. Sweet!

  9. LMAO he really hated that case. I don't blame him because that is the dumbest looking case I have ever seen. I would have told that customer to just find someone else to deal with that case.
