According to MCU's depiction of Vibranium, the metal absorbs and distinguishes kinetic energy, but that probably means that it won't really do much when a chunk of it was thrown at you. And since the shield is made completely of Vibranium that would be exactly what would happen when it hits you even at 40mph. And yes I learned this from "Because Science".
