you only can sound like a native if you are born in that country, otherwise you always hear it.. Like I hear it , when you are talking.

  5. I realized too that speaking like a native means to embody thier behaviors in your speech.. Language usually presents the character or traits of people in a culture, so then internalizing thier behaviors makes it easier to speak in a native way…Well I learned it from Americans in business settings, and it is observable too in other nationalities…

  6. o basically… fake it till you make it 🙂

  7. Great advices, I’ll keep it up and this speeches are really helpful for me. Greetings from Puerto Rico.

  8. To summarize, 17 minutes to tell us that.. We must practise. Thank you Marc

  9. If you are somewhat musical, you might consider joining a choir that sings in your target language. While at first, you will mostly struggle with pronouncing consonants, later, your accent will mostly show in your vowels, as you might have to learn to pick up on the subtle differences there. As vowels physically differ in their overtones, you will pick up the differences much quicker while singing a vowel in an ocean of native people singing the same words, as your voice will not blend in easily with the others and when you figure out how to blend your voice, you will have found the correct pronunciation.

Now there is a boxy sentence that might just reveal my german background 🙂 have fun reading it.

  24. You will never speak like a native speaker but you can achieve a pritty high level of a foreign language. By the way his spasibo in Russian doesn't sound native although his children speak Russian at home.

  25. What I’ve been doing for a week now is to listen to a reader reading me a sentence (it’s a browser add-on) repeating after him while Recording myself then re-listening to both, correct, repeat until I nail it.

  26. He – and most commenters – assumes only spoken languages. Learning a subsequent language in a different mode is even harder. I am a native English user and acquired Auslan user (highly proficient but not with native fluency). Learning a sign language takes everything he said, AND moves it from the mouth to the hands. From auditory to visual. From linear to spatial. From two dimensional to four dimensional. Whole. Other. Level.

  27. Actually, he tried to cover up the learning language based on mostly pronunciation and slightly personal examples. Hope it would help many.
