I love physical reading but with my current scedual that isn’t possible so I have been only doing audiobooks but i try to plug them in whenever i can.
Does anyone have any recommendations of fiction sci-fi, adventure, and fantasy genre authors to follow on fb and Instagram?
new subscriber here, really love your videos <3
How to read more:
Get an e-book.
Read whatever the fuck you want when you want. Book is not interesting? Skip to another one. You can come back to that slow-starting book once you get the habit of reading.
If a friend/partner recommends you a book, fucking read it. Not only for you but also for your friend/partner.
Giving myself permission to DNF books had a huge impact on how much a read. I was the same in that trying to force myself through a book I wasn't enjoying meant I ended up reading a lot less. By putting that one day and moving on to something I do enjoy I have saved myself so much wasted time.
I read for two hours every night before bed and turn Audible on at 1.5x speed. But that’s a great tip to have all the different mediums to switch between!!
Thanks. You should do a video on the benefits of reading books. You mention relaxation but there are many other benefits. Thanks.
For free ebooks get an app called anybooks, it's free for Androids, idk about apple
I used to read soooo much as a child but the only type of reading I can get myself to do nowadays is listening to audiobooks and I don't even know if it really counts as reading if you're listening? I don't know for some reason it doesn't feel like reading even though you're getting the book read out to you and you're still taking in the information and the story. But it's the only way I can concentrate on books because when I try to read my brain goes crazy and is like "you could be doing this and you need to be doing that right now instead" and it's just… ugh why can't you just relax xD
I had a reading slump that lasted 8 years… college & grad school 😂
As a parent of 4 amazing, time-absorbing children, audiobooks have been a lifesaver. Also, as a college professor who teaches literature, audiobooks allows time for me to enjoy books I don’t “have” to read.
Please do a video on how to REMEMBER what you read. For example, sometime I forget what I read a few paragraphs ago. I’ve been annotating, and it’s helped but would like more tips.
I think it's great that you're intentional about reading a book rather than idly scrolling on your phone. One thing for me that enhances the pleasure of reading is a great physical copy of the book and/or great illustrations. I happened to notice a copy of Frankenstein behind you, and I'd recommend getting a copy of Bernie Wrightson's Frankenstein for the truly rich and stunning full-page illustrations he wrought therein. Cheers!
Thank you for this video! Reading books is a new hobby of mine so this is all very new to me. Following you here and listening to how you process reading and any recommendations you have, had really opened my eyes to this new and exciting world. Thank you so much Merphy!
I just cant focus on an audiobook when iam doing something else, i feel like i miss far too much. When i read i like to absorb every page and really get into the world the author has crafted.
I can get behind this shit
Loved the tip about binge reading an author’s work. This is how I would get through so many books when I was a kid and teen.
Do you read multiple books at once or just one and finish that and then move on to the next one? personally I like reading 3 or 4 (preferably of different genres) and read a bit of each every day. That way I dont get tired of a single book (it happens even if youre enjoying it)
Getting a second Bachelors degree in I.T., all I do is read, just not for enjoyment as much as I would like
I’d advise against phone/tablet reading around bed cause the blue light will screw up your sleep. I read at least 1 hour before bed on kindle paper white, no backlight. Also don’t watch rerun Tv you have already seen read. Out tv usually doesn’t go on until after dinner and it’s never rerun stuff.
Honestly there is way to mutch to read, i am freekin overwhelmed 😀
Hi, Merphy! My reading schedule is always like my diet plan: I always wish the number of books I have read each month (and the number of pounds I have shed) are always higher than they are! 😂😂😂 Will definitely engage with your tips when I hit that next reading slump. Or maybe your tips for how to read faster will keep me from hitting a reading slump in the first place!… Thanks so much… ✨😎✨
Y'all are treating reading like a duty or something is good in itself. Reading fiction is a pastime, a recreational activity. You don't "need" to read more than you want to.
My problem for a long time now has been that I haven't fallen in love with a book in ages and it really brings me down. It's not a slump because I still feel like reading and I get really excited about books but when I do read everything just ends up being kind of meh and I end up not caring that much. And I just really miss that feeling of going absolutely nuts over a book because of how good it is.
Unfortunately, this video brought up memories of “the horror” we had when our daughter no longer wanted to nap and started actively resisting.
But then I remembered I would get my reading by reading to my daughter at bedtime. This limits what you can read, but not as much as you think. Grimm’s Fairytales, even toned down, are on par with many fantasy novels. I read my daughter The Belgariad, The Mallorean, The Last Wish, The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, several Terry Pratchett Discworld novels. Once you get used to reading out loud you start doing silly voices and you get into this mode where you are actually reading a line ahead of what you are speaking so that you know which voice to use. This allows you to censor any bad language or other bits that might cause issues.
I can honestly say it was the highlight of my day for years. And my daughter was reading way above her grade as a by product.
These days I’m the one who needs the nap.
Thanks for the app recommendations! I love the forest one 🙂
My problem is that I read non-fiction. My computer books require me to be on a computer at the same time. My math books require me to work through problems on a pad of paper. The few fiction or less serious non-fiction are on my Kindle app on my phone. Complicating things is my 10 month old who takes up a LOT of time.
I’m staying away from that tree app I don’t want to kill any trees even if they are make believe 😁
As a mom this is very much how I read too. If I can have at least the audio book and one type of ebook or physical book I'm golden lol. Did you ever deal with mom guilt for reading? For me I felt really guilty for a while about how I read because of other moms. They didn't read as much (which is fine i didnt care) but they made me feel like they read less because they were focused on every moment and being present with their kids where as I guess they felt I must not. I had to work through that a little bit as a mom who loves her kid but also loves to read.
How to read more:
Get a tablet, take it everywhere with you, and buy eBooks.
Have to ride passenger in the car? Read.
Have to wait at the doctor? Read.
Eating lunch at work? Eat at your desk and read.
Bonus ti0: set your reading app to black background with white text because fuck white backgrounds and their eye bleed.
Thank you for mentioning the Libby app. My husband and I are on a very tight budget. This way I always have access to new books without spending money that can be used for something that we really need

1. Stop watching YouTube
We don't have libraries like you do over there, so there's that. Now we have a virtual library that has a great selection of books, but I would like to have a library like I see you have. And baby nap time… usually it ends up being mommy nap time too. Baby is so active now that no format of book is possible.
