  1. The steam rising from the pile was very satisfying to watch. I enjoyed this video, thank you.

  2. You've inadvertently included a major error in this piece. The ratio of Brown (carbon) to Green (nitrogen) is the REVERSE of what you stated. A healthy, nearly odor-free compost pile will have 2/3rds BROWN material to 1/3rd GREEN. You need much more carbon than nitrogen. Too much nitrogen in relation to carbon and you'll get a smelly mess. Happy Trails p.s. The pile in your clip looked as though it had 2/3rds carbon to 1/3rd nitrogen; maybe not, but it looked that way.

  3. i only have olive leafs and sheep manuer can i make compost out of those?

  4. Thank you so much, I found this video very informative, and it was a blast to watch. The thrill never stopped!

  5. For the brown material, can I use 'golden cane palms'  for my brown material? In Australia, Queensland, the golden cane palms are falling in my yard and I got plenty of them at the moment. And free in my yard. Love your video, I have been wanting do to this composting for a very long time – just in the garden with no bins, no buying extra things.  I do gardening so have a tools to turn the soil.

  6. I make compost all day everyday the chickens are on top adding the nitrogen that breaks down the carbon faster and beneath that the worms are introducing the bacteria it all needs I never need to turn it the birds do the work all I do is add or remove when its overflowing and it seems to take less time this way than what the experts say. it's never to hot and makes the garden grow like a chia pet.

  8. Great vid

  9. Don't you just dump everything into a box?

  10. I have way more brown compost than I have green. What should I do?

  11. Using wayyyy too much greens in ratio to brown, this would make the compost slimy and smelly.

  12. Hey I heard of this great site, where they will teach you how to grow all types of Organic Food, without all the Hard work, and it would also teach you how to make fertilizer for your garden. Check it out, and see if you Like it. gyof.webs.com. May God bless you and His Son Jesus Christ.

  13. What if you don't have a bin to put your compost in, and you just pile it up, should you keep some kind of tarp on top of it? I sometimes get a lot of rain, and it would just flatten it and drench it.

Also, I've read different opinions about using water directly from the hose – chlorine? Will chlorine ruin a good organic compost pile, or will it break down and no toxic problems?

  25. It really does not matter too much. ANY compost will help improve your soil and (almost) ANY method is better than not doing it. Hope this helps.

I'm having trouble understanding what to do.Some people say adding layers of soil to your compost but other people just add layers of brown and green compost with No soil. Can someone please help me,Should I add or not add soil?

  29. Everyone has their methods for composting, personally I can't speak for all methods, but as a person who uses a compost bin, place compost bin in direct sunlight as much as possible shred materials as small as possible to speed up the process don't use the laying method and use more greens in hot temperatures use a liter of water a day when temperatures are over 100F mix materials every 2 to 3 days for air circulation, I can do compost in 2 to 3 months easily, see my video on composting!

  30. when everything looks like bark/soil and not plants and fruit

  31. Not the best idea to put a compost pile under a deck. For one a compost pile will work faster if it gets sunlight and there is always a chance for the pile to catch on fire. Plus you need to be able to get under there and turn the pile

  32. excuse me! hello?

  33. When do you know when you compost is ready to use?

  34. The placement of the baby pic was hilarious. The leaves are eating the baby!!!!!!!!!! lol

  35. How many parts brown to green to baby should I be using?

  36. Look, I don't know who you are, but I know what I'm talking about.. I don't know where you're from but I'm in Mississippi and me and my family grow numerous crops that we sell to local grocery stores.

"Pile up between 25 to 40 parts (by weight) of a carbon-rich material (usually “brown” things like leaves, hay, straw, newspaper, or sawdust) with one part of a nitrogen-rich material (such as manure or food waste)." -Rodale Institute

  41. How do I find brown stuff in the summer when everything is a live and green? I was thinking of letting my grass clippings dry out for a bit before putting it in the pile.

  42. Very good info, thanks!!!

  43. In the wild the nature don't have formulas… there are many formulas to make compost, in the end, all should have the same results

  44. Ok so i actually composted and just used mostly fruits and vegetables waste and some shredded paper and leaves and stuff and stirred it and added water occasionally and its like a mushy creamy type thing. Did i do it wrong? Or is that how its supposed to look?

  45. At 2:02…when composting babies, should they be shredded first?
