Haha! The supermarket thing is soo true. I love how you point out things that we might not even think about as they are just normal for us (germans) 😂😂 but it's just true!! I am living in Spain for 7 years now and the last time I visited my family in Germany I was amazed by how fast the cashier was 😂😂 in Spain they are a lot more relaxed as well. 😂 I really love your videos! Just subscribed a few days ago 🤗😉
I would just like to say you are very pretty and your videos are very informative and I thoroughly enjoy watching them. I learn a lot from them. I was stationed in Berlin during my time in the U.S. Army from 1979 to 1981. Keep up the great work and keeping us informed. You also have a very lovely daughter.
Smiling can never be wrong. Even in Germany.
…..that New Zeeland chatting "friendlyneess" would drive 95% of the Germans in the wairing line crazy, me included. If that happens –
costumer chatting with cashier – there'd be many others making grumpy faces, if not even noises – cashiers have to stay professional.
I always say hello to strangers if they walk past me. Some of them say hello back and some just walk along without responding. It depends on the person🤷🏻♀️(im german)
Your so called "mistakes" are not embarassing at all because I as a native German do these all the time! I like the recycling but the rest you mentioned is really annoying for me, too!!!! So do me a favour and don't adjust to this! Just behave as you feel comfortable!!!!! I really hate it to be fast at the supermarket and I really slow this down! Smiling at strangers is a mistake??? I always smile at strangers! I think you live in a different Germany than I do!
I'm German and I always pay very small prices by card!!! Why are you so occupied to please others? Don't be ashamed. Simply behave as you like! We German can still learn but we need to be challenged! When they are very quick at the supermarket, I deliberately slow down. I don't want to pack up my things as if I was in a hurry!
I can't even imagine the possibility not smiling back t you passing in the street. 😉
Oh man. Nice Day and Good Play.
Super markets still get me! I eventually just started brushing everything into the same bag/s! 😭😭 i always squish the bread..
I really like your channel.. It is nice
It's not just in Germany that people expect you to mean what you say, especially if you ask "How are you?" Instead it's only in country with the English culture that this sentence is used loosely just as a greeting.
Love the videos, you're doing a GREAT job. BTW the compliments I say to you are real, I 100% mean what I say(I know it's not normal from an American)lol, but you are great. Keep it going! Love it!
In case you were wondering: “Electronic funds transfer at point of sale is an electronic payment system involving electronic funds transfers based on the use of payment cards, such as debit or credit cards, at payment terminals located at points of sale. EFTPOS technology originated in the United States in 1981 and was adopted by other countries. Wikipedia”
We have brown glas, green and white 😂

Thank you Antoinette for this lovely video! There are so many differences. I found this posting here about good and bad conversation topics in Germany https://freunde.one/good-and-bad-conversation-topics/
Ist mir auch mal in den USA passiert. Ich habe mich bestimmt 5 Minuten mit der Kassiererin unterhalten und sie bestimmt von ihrem Job abgehalten, aber ich dachte halt ihre Frage wäre ernst gemeint.
The cash/card thing goes both ways, too. My friend and I (both German) had the opposite experience on a recent road trip. Being used to carrying cash almost exclusively, we had a really hard time finding a gas station in Belgium, because they're almost all "card only" and you need the actual physical card to "unlock" the pump. Since we didn't carry any cards but were running really low, we eventually had to speak to a cashier who then had to get permission from his manager for us to get gas with his employee code card and pay it back in cash. Whoops.
I'm starting to think that all these things are in a Germans DNA. I'm only half German, but these videos are making me feel really German. And I live in the US. Even the food video, I didn't realize everyone didn't eat some of those things. Liverwurst was a staple when I was a kid. My husband thought that was weird.
in german supermarkets its basically a challange. who is faster? the person scanning things, or you putting it back into the shopping cart
“This is not possible.” A frequently heard admonishment during my time there!
First of all: I love your accent! I keep watching your videos just to soak it up 🙂
I haven't been to NZ but vey much enjoyed Australia, and i guess it's safe to compare the two in terms of super friendly people. Being Swiss I totally get the "hi, how are you?" it's the same here. We take this question seriously and get into what's going on health-wise, at our job or at home… On the other side when we first experience this while on vacation (eg in the U.S.) we are a bit offended when the taxi driver doesn't really want to hear what we have to say 😉
Please be a smile ambassador in Germany 🙂 They can use a good splash of genuine friendliness, and as you were saying in terms of not speaking the language very well, being kind will go a long way in your favor!
I had the opposite "problem" when living in Scotland. People would casually say "hey how are you?" and I would start going on and on about how I was. I tried to reign it in a bit, because I know that's not what you do. But it still feels very forced to just answer "how are you?" back instead of actually talking. I suppose thats similar to Germans taking compliments so serious 🙂
Ooh yes, the "smiling Problem"… in Sweden we smile at everyone, aswell. When I moved to Austria I learned pretty quickly whom to "normal" smile to (- the swedish way) and whom not to smile to at all, as people sometimes thought I was flirting.
i live in germany
and after watching this i think i should move to new zeeland ☺️
Enjoying your videos but can you please get on with the story abit quicker you do tend to ramble on n on. Thank you
"How are you" auf Deutsch in my region: "Wie isset?", and the answer: "Muss!". And, of couse, sometimes we 🙂
I love your videos! So interesting!
My most embarrassing moment: At the bakery asking for my loaf of bread "beschnitten." One little letter wrong. Don't make this mistake!
My German husband says the reason I cannot pronounce umlauts correctly is because I have the permanent American smile. I smile a lot less after living here so long, but still find myself smiling at strangers and realize as I do it, "They think I'm a crazy person."
I have trouble with the lack of personal space here. Waiting in line I was trying to give the person ahead of me space, and an old man cut in line in front of me. When I told him I was next in line, he told me I was doing it wrong. I went to my car and cried from acute culture shock.
After living in Germany for 12 years I still suck at packing my groceries! It took me a while to get out of the habit of asking acquaintances how they are doing, now I just ask my good friends. But most of my embarrassing mistakes are from butchering the German language. I meant to tell a waiter at a restaurant that my meal tasted good, but I said "schmeken Sie gut!"
I have embarrassed myself in New Zealand. We were on an organised your at the West coast of the South Island on the way to the Fox Glacier. Earlier we had lunch at a salmon farm. Me stupid drinking 2 big diet cokes and water.
As we were arriving at Fox Glacier I really didn't think to find a toilet. So it had to be the bushes. As I came back, my then husband laughed and pointed 2 metres from him to the toilet facility. Of course all the other tourists noticed what I have done.
